Trace element distribution in garnet: growth and diffusion

Master Thesis title: Trace element distribution in garnet: growth and diffusion
Description:Garnet is one of the most robust and ubiquitous minerals that record element zoning during crustal metamorphism. In addition to major element distribution, zoning in trace elements can provide a wealth of information to document the changing conditions of garnet growth and modification. In the course of this project, the trace element distribution in garnet grains will be mapped in 2D to evaluate the growth processes behind the original zoning and evaluate diffusion of elements due to high temperature metamorphism. The target samples will be granulites, where residence at high temperature may have favored diffusion of trace elements, which in turn can provide a time constraint of the duration of metamorphism. Mapping will be done in thin section with laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to achieve a lateral resolution of 10-15 µm. The project will include petrographic observations, major an trace element mapping (analytical work) and diffusion modelling.
