Master Thesis title: Himalaya gabbros: magmatic history and polymetamorphic evolution
Description:There are only a few places in the Himalaya, where gabbros can be found. During previous fieldwork, small bodies of olivine gabbros were discovered in the High Himalaya Crystalline in Himachal Pradesh. A reconnaissance study of the rocks has shown that magmatic relics of olivine, pyroxene and plagioclase are preserved. Multiple metamorphic overprints ranging from granulite to amphibolite facies conditions are also documented in the metagabbros.

This project aims to determine the their petrological evolution of the gabbro, with emphasis on the time of intrusion, which is a crucial part in the interpretation of these rare rocks. Mineral separates of gabbro samples will be screened for magmatic zircon that can be dated. The magmatic history of the gabbro will be constrained by in-situ trace element characteristics of magmatic minerals. Additionally, metamorphic corona textures will be investigated with element mapping in order to quantify metamorphic conditions. We expect new insights into the evolution of the High Himalaya Crystalline before and during the collision of India with Asia.

The project will include mineral separation, petrographic characterization of thin sections, electron microprobe and laser ablation mass spectrometry analyses and SIMS analyses. M. Wyss, who described this rocks in earlier work, will be an advisor.
