LECTURERS: Prof. B. Grob├ęty
SCOPE:
HELD AT:FR
CATEGORY: Analytical Methods and Modelling
ECTS Credits:2.5
PREREQUISITES:
REQUISITES:
FORMAT:Lecture and excursion (5 days)
FREQUENCY:biennially in spring semester, held in even years
CONTENTS:Raw materials, manufacture of cement, cement mineralogy, cement microstructures, energetics of cement production, cement hydration, concrete, aggregates, chemical additives, performance of fresh concrete, mechanical properties of concrete, damage processes: carbonatization, alkali-silica-reaction; glass making, glass defects. Excursion to a cement manufacturing plant. The course gives an introduction into the scientific, engineering, environmental and economic aspects of cement and glass production. The parrticipants will be able to assess the quality of a cement/glass (mineralogy, microstructure, ...) ande to tune production parameters to improve it. They will learn how to control the hydration process of Portland cement and the physicochemical performance of concrete. Chemistry and Petrography tools will be given to recognizen and to quantity domage processes in concrete.
ASSESSMENT:written test at the end of the course
