COURSE TITLE: Noerdlinger Ries Excursion

SCOPE:Excursion to the Impact Crater Nördlinger Ries

REQUISITES:Core course for specialty Earth and Life Evolution (ELE)
FORMAT:Field Trip
FREQUENCY:biennially in spring semester, held in even years
CONTENTS:The Nördlinger Ries (24 km) and the nearby Steinheim basin (3.8 km) belong to the best-studied meteorite craters in the world. Topics of the excursion include the geology of the target area, the impact phenomena that affected the target rocks (mainly crystalline and Mesozoic sediments) such as brecciation and various degrees of shock metamorphism, as well as some post-impact phenomena. In addition, we will visit the exhibits at Rieskrater-Museum in Nördlingen.
