Details of Courses

COURSE TITLE: Waste Materials & Circular Economy
LECTURERS: Dr. Gisela Weibel
SCOPE:(Update follows!) Characterisation of solid wastes, long-term geochemical behaviour in the environment, feasibility of recycling, disposal options, regulations.
HELD AT:BE
CATEGORY: Applications
ECTS Credits:1.5
PREREQUISITES:
REQUISITES:A minor part of the course will deal with local Swiss regulations, with some handouts in German. However, no previous knowledge of German is required for the course or examination
FORMAT:
FREQUENCY:biennially in fall semester, held in even years
CONTENTS:(Update follows!) Adequate disposal of waste and - in the case of hazardous contamination - remediation of contaminated sites, requires a good understanding of the geochemical behaviour of different waste types and of anorganic and organic contaminants. Also the fluxes of materials from their raw or processed state to their waste state need to be quantified. Knowledge of these factors allows appropriate design of waste-specific disposal sites, of strategies for the possible recycling of waste material, and of remediation of contaminated sites, all within the framework of local environmental regulations. This course covers: characterisation of non-radioactive solid and liquid waste; waste-deposit types; disposal strategies; risk assessment of contaminated sites, including historical and technical investigations; remediation strategies for contaminated sites, including in-situ and ex-situ techniques; recycling possibilities; and introduction to Swiss waste legislation.
ASSESSMENT:Written or oral examination
SPECIALITIES:EM, ERG

(prer): Courses with prerequisites.
