Bern-Fribourg Master in Earth Sciences

Details of Courses

COURSE TITLE: Mineral Resources. Lecture and Practical
LECTURERS: Prof. L. Diamond, Prof. Dr. T. Pettke
SCOPE:Genetic models and exploration methods of ore- and industrial mineral deposits
CATEGORY: Principles
ECTS Credits:2.25
FREQUENCY:biennially in fall semester, held in odd years
CONTENTS:Industrial demand for new mineral resources continues to grow worldwide, especially for metals with high-tech applications. At the same time, known resources exposed at the Earth’s surface are being rapidly depleted. Future emphasis in the mineral resource sector will therefore be on finding deposits that are hidden below the surface and that can be exploited in an environmentally sound way. Geologists employed in this sector must increasingly rely on their predictive understanding of how the target mineral deposits have formed. This course covers: types of mineral deposits; processes that form ores and industrial mineral deposits; exploration methods.Practicals include examination of maps, rock samples and microscope thin-sections, and computer calculations.
ASSESSMENT:Written examination
