COURSE TITLE: Basin Evolution

SCOPE:Understanding the processes of basin formation in the Alps in comparision to compressional, extensional and transpressional geodynamic settings of non-Alpine basins
CATEGORY: UNIT - From Basins to Mountain Belts: The Alps in comparison to other geodynamic settings

PREREQUISITES: From Basins to Mountain Belts can either be taken as an entire block (10 ECTS) or as individual components, which either are the mountain belt part and excursion (5 ECTS) or the basin evolution part and excursion (5ECTS).
FORMAT:Lecture and seminar
FREQUENCY:biennially in fall semester, held in even years
CONTENTS:Theory part: Rheology and basin evolution, divergent settings (Rhine-Bresse Graben, North Atlantic, Alpine continental margins - Helvetics, Penninics), convergent settings (foreland basins - mechanisms and feedback, Flysch basins, Molasse basins, intramontane basins Eastern Alps), intracontinental basins (intracontinental sags, lithospheric folding, strike slip basins) Literature seminar: reading, presentation and discussion of selected papers
ASSESSMENT:theory part: written examination; seminar: graded presentation
