Topics of the excursion include the geology of the target area, the impact phenomena such as brecciation and various degrees of shock metamorphism that affected the target rocks (crystalline basement and Mesozoic sediments), as well as post-impact deposits in the craters. In addition, we will visit the exhibits at Rieskrater-Museum in Nördlingen. Previous to the excursion, an introductory course on shock metamorphic effects in target rocks will be held at the Natural History Museum Bern (1/2 day, including study of hand specimens and thin sections).
