Geotopes and Geoparks – The “Geopark Vulkan-Eifel” as an example
LECTURERS: PD Dr. Malte Junge, Dr. T. Burri
SCOPE:The combined field course with lectures provides insight into the concept of geotopes and geoparks (geoheritage). What are geotopes or geoparks, what is their legal definition and what’s the idea behind such parks? The scope is to give insight into the geological volcanic history of the Eifel, but also to learn more about the challenges and objectives of geoparks. To get a deeper insight into problems related to the Geopark-organisation we will collaborate with the team of the Geopark Vulkan-Eifel. Not just geology but also promotion, tourism, maintenance and care of geotopes, financing and other relevant points will be taken into consideration and discussion. Thus, the course-topic is not purely geologic but intended to be interdisciplinary in a very broad way. It deals with the interaction between geology and humans.
