Details of Courses

Advanced Computer Programming for Geosciences
LECTURERS: Dr. P. Lanari, Prof. J. Hermann
SCOPE:5 lectures of 3h
HELD AT:BE
CATEGORY:
ECTS Credits:2
PREREQUISITES: The course Basic Computer Programming for Geosciences is a prerequisite for this course.
REQUISITES:
FORMAT:Lecture and computer lab
FREQUENCY:annually in fall semester
CONTENTS:This course deals with advanced computer programming techniques for solving complex geological problems using the matrix-based MATLAB language. It will be shown how geological processes can be approximated by mathematical equations that can be solved by programming. Application examples include geochemical modeling and landscape evolution modeling. By the end of the course the participants will be able understand basic modeling presented in the literature. They will have the skills and knowledge to write a program to solve a specific problem and to design and build graphical user interface (GUI) programs to handle large data sets. Students will be able to model data for their Masters projects.
ASSESSMENT:several exercises and final project

(prer): Courses with prerequisites.
