| SCOPE: | Introduction to mathematical methods that model spatial processes and permit estimation of values at unsampled locations. Such methods are widely used in map-oriented geological applications involving geochemical, hydrological, paleoclimate, erosion-rate, soil composition and other data. Most geographic information systems (GIS) normally include geostatistical methods for this kind of data analysis and interpolation. |

| CONTENTS: | Basic geostatistical techniques for data analysis and interpolation are presented. This involves (1) statistical analysis of collected data to understand the connection between data values from place to place in a study area (variogram analysis), and (2) use of the estimated statistical properties to interpolate values at locations which have not been sampled (kriging). Exercises will use the popular program R, a free software environment (http://www.r-project.org). |
