SCOPE:Description of the evolution of a polyorogenic basement: The formation of igneous and metamorphic rocks, and their tectonic framework, in the Alpine, Variscan and Ordovician orogenic cycles

PREREQUISITES: From Basins to Mountain Belts can either be taken as an entire block (10 ECTS) or as individual components, which either are the mountain belt part and excursion (5 ECTS) or the basin evolution part and excursion (5ECTS).

FORMAT:Lecture and seminar
FREQUENCY:biennially in fall semester, held in even years
CONTENTS:Theory part: polycyclic evolutions (pre-Variscan rocks in the Alps); how to recognize relicts of old orogens (the Variscan orogeny); monocyclic evolution: the Alpine Orogeny; low temperature geothermochronology and exhumation Literature seminar: reading, presentation and discussion of selected papers.
